MUCH OF THE NORTHEAST IS DEALING WITH A MAJOR WINTER STORM TODAY. FORTUNATELY, OUR AREA IS MISSING MOST OF THE STORM.  HOWEVER, WE DO HAVE A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT NOW THROUGH 7AM SATURDAY.

THE BLAIR COUNTY CORONER AND ALTOONA POLICE WERE CALLED TO A FATAL ACCIDENT AT 6TH AVENUE AND 17TH STREET IN ALTOONA SHORTLY BEFORE 6 THIS MORNING.  A SPEEDING CAR REPORTEDLY BROADSIDED A GARBAGE TRUCK, KILLING THE 21 YEAR OLD MALE DRIVER.  THE TRASH TRUCK DRIVER WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL AS A PRECAUTION.

MICHAEL SHERWOOD OF NORTHERN CAMBRIA HAS PLEAD GUILTY TO HOMICIDE BY MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE.  SHERWOOD IS A METHADONE PATIENT AND IN SEPTEMBER OF 2010 HIS PICKUP TRUCK HIS A CAR IN NORTHERN CAMBRIA, KILLING ONE PERSON.  A SECOND PERSON DIED TWO WEEKS LATER.  SHERWOOD WILL BE SENTENCED IN MARCH.  HE’S EXPECTED TO GET 5 TO 12 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON.

IF YOU WERE CALLED FOR JURY DUTY IN CAMBRIA COUNTY … YOU’D BETTER SHOW UP.  OFFICIALS SAY ANYONE WHO DOESN’T SHOW WILL BE ORDERED TO APPEAR AT A HEARING AND IF FOUND IN CONTEMPT OF COURT WILL BE FINED 100-DOLLARS.  YESTERDAY … 43 OF ABOUT 200 PEOPLE SCHEDULED TO APPEAR FOR JURY SELECTION DID NOT SHOW UP, AND IN JANUARY, 31 PEOPLE DID NOT APPEAR FOR JURY SELECTION FOR A MURDER TRIAL AND DID NOT PROVIDE ANY EXCUSE.

IN CHESTER COUNTY … THE WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY IS MOURNING THE LOSS OF A POPULAR STUDENT.  SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAID 20-YEAR-OLD SEAN CASEY WAS DIAGNOSED TUESDAY WITH BACTERIAL MENINGITIS AND DIED WEDNESDAY.  HE HAD JUST VISITED PENN STATE IN STATE COLLEGE AND OFFICIALS THERE ARE COOPERATING WITH HEALTH OFFICIALS.   CASEY WAS IN HIS THIRD YEAR OF STUDIES IN THE UNIVERSITY'S VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM.

A BLAIR COUNTY FAMILY HAS NOTHING LEFT AFTER A MOBILE HOME FIRE ABOUT 9:30 THURSDAY MORNING.  THE BLAZE BROKE OUT AT THE HOME OF JOY AND DON FEATHERS AND THEIR SON ALONG TURKEY VALLEY ROAD IN FRANKSTOWN TOWNSHIP.  WITNESSES REPORTED HEADING SEVERAL LOUD EXPLOSIONS WHICH WERE PROBABLY THE TRAILER’S PROPANE TANKS.  NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

HIGH SPEED INTERNET SERVICE AND BETTER CELL PHONE COVERAGE IS COMING TO OGLE  TOWNSHIP IN SOMERSET COUNTY.  THE SOMERSET DAILY AMERICAN REPORTS THAT VERIZON NEEDED AT LEAST 40 OF THE 500 RESIDENTS THERE … TO PURCHASE AT LEAST A YEAR’S WORTH OF HIGH SPEED WEB SERVICE BEFORE IT COULD MAKE THE INSTALLATION.   THE PROJECT WILL ALSO ELIMINATE A CELL PHONE “DEAD ZONE” ON A 16-MILE STRETCH OF ROUTE 56 BETWEEN PLEASANTVILLE AND WINDBER.
