IN BEDFORD COUNTY … LEONA GOTSHALL, IN A PLEA BARGAIN, HAS PLEAD GUILTY TO STEALING MORE THAN 11-THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE CHESTNUT RIDGE P.T.O.   SHE ADMITTED YESTERDAY THAT, WHILE WORKING AS THE GROUP’S TREASURER … TO CASHING MORE THAN THIRTY CHECKS AND APOLOGIZED TO THE GROUP AND TO THE CHILDREN SHE SAYS SHE STOLE FROM.  SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY NO SCHOOL PROGRAMS WERE AFFECTED.  GOTSHALL MAY NOT RECEIVE JAIL TIME, BUT OFFICIALS DO EXPECT RESTITUTION.

THE DUBOIS MALL HAD TO BE CLOSED FOR A TIME YESTERDAY … AFTER A GREASE FIRE BROKE OUT AT THE ARBY’S RESTAURANT AT THE MALL.  AFTER THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT, THE RESTAURANT AND THE MALL WAS REOPENED.

IN BEDFORD COUNTY … SOMEONE BROKE INTO A HOME ALONG DELL ROAD IN BROADTOP TOWNSHIP, APPARENTLY TO STEAL RARE COINS.  AUTHORITIES SAY ABOUT $400 WORTH OF RARE COINS WERE STOLEN. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL AUTHORITIES.

IN PITTSBURGH … ONE OF THREE SUSPECTS IS NOW BEING HELD IN THE STABBING OF STEELERS’ RIGHT TACKLE MIKE ADAMS.  AFTER THREATENING TO KILL ADAMS IN AN ATTEMPTED CARJACKING, THE ASSAILANTS RAN, BUT ONE DROPPED A CELL PHONE.  EVIDENCE ON THE PHONE LED TO THE ARREST OF 25-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL PARANAY.  ADAMS HAD TO UNDERGO SURGERY FOR A LACERATED COLON BUT IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY.

A FIRE HAS LEFT A BLAIR FAMILY HOMELESS.   JOYCE SMITH, HER HUSBAND, HER 97 YEAR OLD MOTHER, 2 ADULT CHILDREN, AND HER DAUGHTER’S BOYFRIEND ARE ALL STAYING AT A LOCAL HOTEL FOLLOWING A FIRE ALONG MILL HILL ROAD IN WILLIAMSBURG, BLAIR COUNTY.  NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED, BUT SEVERAL PETS DIED IN THE FIRE.   AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THE BLAZE WAS ACCIDENTAL, AND THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS SAYS A U-S JUSTICE DEPARTMENT REPORT ALLEGEDLY ABUSE OF MENTAL HEALTH INMATES AT THE STATE PRISON AT CRESSON DID NOT FACTOR INTO THE DECISION TO CLOSE THE LOCKUP BY THE END OF THIS MONTH.  THE REPORT CLAIMS INMATES WITH MENTALL ILLNESSES AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES WERE CONFINED TO THEIR CELLS FOR 22 TO 23 HOURS A DAY AND SOLITARY CONFINEMENT WAS USED TO WAREHOUSE INMATES WHO NEEDED PROPER TREATMENT.  CORRECTIONS DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS SAY IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN INPLEMENTED ACROSS THE ENTIRE STATE PRISON SYSTEM.  MOST OF S-C-I CRESSON’S INMATES HAVE ALREADY BEEN TRANSFERRED TO A NEW FACILITY NEAR STATE COLLEGE.

PENN STATE OFFICIALS CONFIRM THEY ARE CONSIDERING HOLDING A HOCKEY GAME AT BEAVER STADIUM…EITHER AN NHL OR BIG 10 GAME.  JOE BATTISTA OF UNIVERSITY HOCKEY OPERATIONS SAYS THE STADIUM IS USUALLY WINTERIZED, SO THE GAME WOULD MOST LIKELY BE SCHEDULED IN DECEMBER.  PENN STATE’S NEW PEGULA ICE ARENA IS ALMOST READY  TO OPEN IN STATE COLLEGE.
