A SOMERSET COUNTY BUS COMPANY IS BEING SUED OVER LAST WEEKEND'S DEADLY ACCIDENT INVOLVING THE SETON HILL WOMEN'S LACROSSE TEAM.  THE COACH, HER UNBORN SON, AND THE BUS DRIVER WERE KILLED WHEN THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE AND HIT A TREE.  AMANDA MICHALSKI WAS AMONG THE 19-WOMEN INJURED IN THE CRASH.  SHE REMAINS HOSPITALIZED AND HAS FILED A CIVIL SUIT CLAIMING NEGLIGENCE AND RECKLESSNESS ON THE PART OF THE DRIVER.

A FIRE INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY AT A PUBLIC HIGH RISE IN UNIONTOWN.  FIREFIGHTERS HAD TO EVACUATE MARSHALL MANOR SHORTLY BEFORE SEVEN O'CLOCK LAST EVENING.  MANY RESIDENTS WERE TRAPPED INSIDE THEIR APARTMENTS AWAITING RESCUE.

A NEW FUNDING PLAN OUT OF HARRISBURG IS AIMED AT SAVING AMTRAK'S "PENNSYLVANIAN" LINE.  THE RAIL SERVICE CONNECTS PHILADELPHIA TO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA.  THE STATE WILL PAY AMTRAK ALMOST FOUR-MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO KEEP ONE TRAIN RUNNING DAILY IN EACH DIRECTION.  THE NEW PLAN REQUIRES AMTRAK TO RECOVER MORE COSTS THAN IT DID PREVIOUSLY.

DONATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED TO HELP THE WILLIAM SHANER FAMILY OF CLEARFIELD TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY.   THEIR HOME WAS LEVELED TUESDAY MORNING WHEN BRAD KOLLAR DROVE HIS TRUCK TO THE HOUSE AND SET OFF AN EXPLOSION, KILLING HIMSELF AND CRITICALLY INJURING SHANER.  SHANER’S SON HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL.  YOU CAN DROP OFF ITEMS AT HAIR RAZOR SALON IN PATTON.

IN BEDFORD COUNTY COURT TODAY, 23 YEAR OLD CORY CHILDERS (“CHILL-DERZ”) OF BEDFORD COULD GET UP TO 10 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON.  HE PLEADED GUILTY TO DRUNK DRIVING FOR THE APRIL 2012 CRASH THAT KILLED 5-YEAR-OLD JULYEN (JULIAN) WINTERS OF MARYLAND.  THE BOY WAS RIDING IN A MINI-VAN STRUCK BY CHILDERS’ CAR IN BEDFORD TOWNSHIP.  CHILDERS AND THE MINI-VAN DRIVER BOTH HAD MAJOR INJURIES. A 2 YEAR OLD WAS ALSO HURT.  CHILDERS HAS A PREVIOUS D-U-I ON HIS RECORD.

THE CITY OF ALTOONA WAS DECLARED FINANCIALLY DISTRESSED LAST YEAR, BUT IT’S NOW GETTING MORE THAN ONE HALF MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE STATE TO HELP WITH THE FINANCIAL RECOVERY.  THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED THE AWARD OF A 519-THOUSAND DOLLARS MUNICIPALITIES FINANCIAL RECOVERY ACT GRANT.  IT WILL SUPPORT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT WILL HELP TO REDUCE COSTS AND INCREASE TAX AND REVENUE COLLECTIONS.
