A report suggests that Matt Lauer was ready to take the fall for the troubles on NBC's "Today" show.
Lauer told NBC Universal's chief executive Steve Burke that he would leave if he felt the show would be better off without him. Burke dismissed any idea of Lauer leaving.
"Today" has slipped to second place behind ABC's "Good Morning America". That ratings slide began after the dismissal of Ann Curry as co-host.
Lauer had been blamed for Curry's removal as co-host.
