If you do lose power, it's the perfect time to have some family time. Get out the flashlights and play some board games. Or tell ghost stories. After all, it's almost Halloween! But before the fun, there are a few things you'll need to do... just to be practical.
Call the electric company. Don't assume that your neighbors have contacted your power company. Make sure to report your outage as well as any downed wires in your area. Here's the number for Penelec: 1-888-LIGHTSS.
Use your battery-operated radio to keep up on local news and weather conditions.
Keep the fridge and freezer closed. According to foodsafety.gov, a fully stocked refrigerator will keep food safe for UP TO 4 HOURS and food in the freezer should be okay if it is at 40 degrees or less when the power comes back on.
Flashlights are safer than candles. If you do use candles, don't burn them while you're sleeping and don't leave them unattended.
