Carly Rae Jepsen named "Rising Star for 2012"

Carly Rae Jepsen could not have had a better 2012.  To top off the year, "Billboard" has named the Canadian pop singer its "Rising Star" for 2012.  The award acknowledges Jepsen's breakout year with the smash success of her song "Call Me Maybe," which was also named "Song of the Summer" by the magazine earlier this year.  She will be presented with the honor at "Billboard's" Women in Music event on November 30th.  Katy Perry, who was named Woman Of the Year, will also be honored at the event.  In a statement, Jepsen said she's grateful for the honor because she grew up "listening to and being influenced by countless female artists."  She also said that she hopes to "inspire others" through her own music.

Jepsen, who was virtually unknown at the beginning of this year, shot to stardom after pop star and fellow Canadian Justin Bieber tweeted about "Call Me Maybe."  The catchy single spent nine weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and has sold more than ten million copies worldwide.
