STATE TRANSPORTATION CREWS ARE KEEPING CLOSE WATCH ON HURRICANE SANDY, A STORM WHICH HAS POTENTIAL TO BRING SEVERE WEATHER TO CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA LATER THIS WEEKEND.  THE NEW FORECAST SHOWS PENNSYLVANIA TAKING A DIRECT HIT BY WHAT'S BEING DUBBED A "FRANKENSTORM" DUE TO ITS RARE COMBINATION OF HIGH WINDS, TORRENTIAL RAIN AND POSSIBLY SNOW.  ALL UP AND DOWN THE EAST COAST, OFFICIALS ARE BRACING FOR SANDY, WHICH SLAMMED CUBA AND THE CARIBBEAN YESTERDAY.

POLICE ARRESTED A MAN YESTERDAY AFTER HE THREATENED TO TAKE HIS OWN LIFE AND LED POLICE ON A CHASE ON ROUTE 56 BETWEEN JOHNSTOWN AND SEWARD.  IT STARTED AT THE SCENIC OVERLOOK ON ROUTE 56 WHERE POLICE SAY A MAN WHO WAS DRUNK AND ARMED WITH A RIFLE WAS THREATENING TO TAKE HIS OWN LIFE.  THE MAN TOOK OFF WHEN POLICE ARRIVED.  HE WAS EVENTUALLY CAUGHT.  AUTHORITIES FOUND WEAPONS, DRUGS AND ALCOHOL INSIDE HIS CAR.  POLICE ARE NOT YET RELEASING HIS NAME, BUT THEY SAY HE WILL BE CHARGED.

A RALLY AND VIGIL WILL BE HELD IN MILL HALL TOMORROW TO SUPPORT VICTIM ONE IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. AARON FISHER IDENTIFIED HIMSELF IN AN ABC NEWS INTERVIEW LAST WEEK AND HE’S ALSO WRITTEN A BOOK WITH HIS MOTHER.  THEY CLAIM HE REPORTED SANDUSKY’S ABUSE TO SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS AND WAS MOSTLY IGNORED.  THE RALLY IS AT 11AM OUTSIDE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL.

THE BEDFORD COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PLANS TO SEEK AT LEAST A 50 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE WHEN FORMER NEW YORK CITY POLICE OFFICER KERRY SMITH IS SENTENCED TODAY.   EARLIER THIS YEAR, A JUDGE FOUND THE 50 YEAR OLD EVERETT MAN GUILTY OF MOLESTING 2 YOUNG SISTERS OVER AN 11 YEAR PERIOD STARTING IN 2000.   SMITH WAS DISMISSED BY THE N-Y-P-D DUE TO A SERIES OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

A FORMER CLEARFIELD COUNTY FUGITIVE OF THE WEEK HAS BEEN CAPTURED. 

DISTRICT ATTORNEY WILLIAM SHAW SAYS 23 YEAR OLD BARRY MARTELL OF FRENCHVILLE AND 2 OTHER SUSPECTS WERE ACCUSED OF STEALING 35-THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF EQUIPMENT FROM A COAL SITE IN GOSHEN TOWNSHIP BACK IN THE SPRING.   MARTELL WAS ORDERED TO TRIAL AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING, BUT HE FAILED TO APPEAR FOR HIS NEXT COURT APPEARANCE.   MARTELL WAS PICKED UP WEDNESDAY AT A RESIDENCE IN GOSHEN TOWNSHIP.  HE’S ALSO CHARGED WITH FAILING TO APPEAR IN A SIMPLE ASSAULT CASE.

NEW PRISON REFORM LAWS SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR IN HARRISBURG YESTERDAY ARE AIMED AT REDUCING COSTS AT STATE PENITENTIARIES AND REDUCING RECIDIVISM.  THE CRUX OF THE BIPARTISAN PLAN IS TO MOVE INMATES FROM STATE PRISONS TO COUNTY LOCK-UPS.  ON AVERAGE, IT COSTS 34-THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR TO HOUSE AN INMATE IN THE STATE PRISON SYSTEM.
