NURSES PLAN STRIKE

93-PERCENT OF THE 800 REGISTERED NURSES AT UPMC ALTOONA VOTED YESTERDAY TO REJECT THE LAST, NEST, AND FINAL CONTRACT OFFER AND SEND A STRIKE NOTICE. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THE NURSES UNION SAYS THE 1-DAY STRIKE WILL BE HELD TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH. A NEWS CONFERENCE IS SCHEDULED TODAY AND OFFICIALS WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS. THE UNION SAYS THIS WILL BE A UNFAIR-LABOR-PRACTICE STRIKE. NURSES ARE CONCERNED ABOUT STAFFING, HEALTH INSURANCE, AND RETIREMENT BENEFITS.

MURDER IN JOHNSTOWN

JOHNSTOWN POLICE HAVEN’T RELEASED MANY DETAILS ABOUT THE WEEKEND MURDER NEAR THE OAKHURST HOMES, BUT WJAC REPORTS THAT INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE VICTIMS WERE TARGETED. 27 YEAR OLD JAREEK ADAMS WAS KILLED AND A SECOND PERSON WAS INJURED WHEN THEY WERE SHOT JUST BEFORE 7:30 SATURDAY EVENING. THE SECOND VICTIM IS REPORTED IN STABLE CONDITION AT MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER. NO WORD ON ANY SUSPECTS.

KILLER SENTENCED

A CAMBRIA COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 20 YEAR OLD SHAHLIEKGREENE TO 15 TO 35 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON FOR THE FEBRUARY SHOOTING DEATH OF JOSHUA PRICE AT HIS HOME ON CYPRESS AVENUE. GREENE PLEADED GUILTY TO MURDER. PRICE’S MOTHER TOLD THE JUDGE THAT PRICE’S TWIN SISTER COMMITTED SUICIDE MONTHS AFTER THE MURDER.

FBI GETS INVOLVED

18 YEAR OLD VLADISLAV MIFTAKHOV REMAINS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON AND WTAJ REPORTS THAT THE F-B-I HAS OFFICIALLY TAKEN OVER THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. THE PENN STATE ALTOONA ENGINEERING STUDENT IS A RUSSIAN NATIVE WHO WAS ARRESTED OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN POLICE FOUND BOMB-MAKING MATERIALS AT HIS JUNIATA APARTMENT. CHARGES INCLUDE POSSESSING A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION AND RISKING A CATASTROPHE. MIFTAKOV TOLD POLICE HE PLANNED TO SET OFF THE EXPLOSIVES IN A REMOTE FIELD.

FIRES IN BLAIR AND CENTRE COUNTY

FIRE DESTROYED A GARAGE OWNED BY DAVID AND MIKE PADULA IN BELLWOOD MONDAY AFTERNOON. THE BUILDING, AT 10-23 EAST MAIN STREET, IS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS, BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED. FIRE OFFICIALS BELIEVE A WOODBURNER IS TO BLAME.

AN ELECTRICAL FIRE DAMAGED A HOME ON LEE STREET IN BELLEFONTE MONDAY AFTERNOON. NO ONE WAS INJURED AND FIRE DAMAGE WAS KEPT TO THE UPPER FLOOR AND ATTIC. A RESIDENT WHO LIVES THERE WAS ABLE TO GT THE SEVERAL PETS OUT BEFORE FIRE CREWS ARRIVED.

SPECIAL ELECTION

A SPECIAL ELECTION IS SCHEDULED TODAY TO FILL THE 78TH DISTRICT STATE HOUSE SEAT LEFT VACANT LAST FALL WITH THE DEATH OF LONGTIME REPRESENTATIVE DICK HESS. BEDFORD MINISTER AND REPUBLICAN PARTY OFFICER JESSE TOPPER IS RUNNING AGAINST DEMOCRAT BARBARA BARRON, AN EVERETT EDUCATOR. THE DISTRICT COVERS ALL OF FULTON COUNTY AND PARTS OF BEDFORD AND HUNTINGDON COUNTIES. THE WINNER WILL ONLY BE IN OFFICE FOR LESS THAN A YEAR BEFORE THE NOVEMBER 2014 ELECTION.

VOTER ID LAW CHALLENGE?

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT IS ASKING A JUDGE TO RECONSIDER HIS RULING WHICH SAID THE STATE'S VOTER ID LAW IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. CORBETT'S LAWYERS FILED THE REQUEST YESTERDAY BUT STOPPED SHORT OF SAYING THEY WILL APPEAL THE DECISION. OPPONENTS OF THE LAW SAY IT WAS DESIGNED TO SUPPRESS THE VOTES OF MINORITIES AND THE POOR.
