tragedy in boston

2 EXPLOSIONS ROCKED THE FINISH LINE AT THE BOSTON MARATHON YESTERDAY, killing 3 people, including an 8-year-old boy. at least 141 runners, spectators, and volunteers WERE WOUNDED, AND 17 REMAIN IN critical CONDITION. A 15 MEMBER team from our region was running to benefit Centre Volunteers in Medicine, a clinic in State College for those without insurance…AND Officials say THEY ARE ALL OK. several Penn State students and alumni ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE RACE ALONG WITH SOME RUNNERS FROM THE HOLLIDAYSBURG YMCA, SOMERSET, AND HUNTINGDON. PENN STATE SPOKESWOMAN LISA POWERS TELLS THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT IN LIGHT OF THe attacks, THE UNIVERSITY will evaluate the security of upcoming athletic events on campus, such as Tonight’s  Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K run and the Special Olympics Beaver Stadium Run on Sunday.

the centre county coroner CONFIRMS THAT A MAN WAS KILLED SHORTLY AFTER 1 THIS MORNING AND HIS BODY was FOUND ON THE GROUND OUTSIDE the university gateWAY apartment building AT 616 EAST COLLEGE AVENUE. reports from the scene indicate that HE fEll TO HIS DEATH from an apartment window. police have not released any OTHER details.

arraignment for accused killer

today in cambria county court, formal arraignment is scheduled for gregory conzo of Beaverdale. he’s charged with homicide and related offenses in the November death of Michael Pcola of Summerhill Township. police say conzo had previously assaulted pcola’s mother, who was his girlfriend. he went to their home to discuss the domestic violence charges…then fought with Pcola and struck him with a baseball bat. Pcola died 2 days later.


IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 29 YEAR OLD RONALD STREETS JUNIOR OF Maryland pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide CHARGES. IN June OF LAST YEAR, HIS CAR CRASHED IN WELLERSBURG, killING HIS PASSENGER, 26 YEAR OLD ANTHONY WINTER OF MICHIGAN. Streets walked to a neighborhood home to call his father and an ex-girlfriend for a ride before calling 9-1-1. HE ALSO PLEADED TO FAILURE TO NOTIFY AUTHORITIES. Streets faces up to 9 years in state prison when he is sentenced on July 10.

Facing several lawsuits, the Altoona-Johnstown DIOCESE is NOW conducting its own investigation into THE allegations AGAINST Franciscan friar STEPHEN BAKER WHO ALLEGEDLY sexually abused MORE THAN 50 STUDENTS AT JOHNSTOWN’S Bishop McCort HIGH SCHOOL in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. SPOKESMAN TONY DEGOL CONFIRMS TO THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT THAT THE investigation is ongoing. Baker COMMITTED SUICIDE in January AT SAINt Bernadine’S Monastery In Hollidaysburg. the school IS DOing its own PROBE AND PLACED Principal Ken Salem on administrative leave on March 1.

penn state altoona pot busts

state and local drug agents along with penn state altoona police have busted 6 people in connection with the sale of marijuana. starting in march, authorities conducted 5 controlled buys and they seized a quarter-pound of pot, drug paraphernalia, and over 13-hundred dollars cash. police say the sources of the marijuana were at the nittany pointe apartments, oak hall, and at 913 north 2nd street in altoona.

tax deadline extended

Pennsylvania officials are ruling out foul play in yesterday afternoon's Department of Revenue website crash. The site was down for at least 4 hours, making it impossible for last-minute tax filers to meET the deadline. NOW, the state has extended THAT DEADLINE until midnight tonight for filing Pennsylvania State taxes. Investigators are working to find the cause of the crash.
