SHOT TO DEATH IN JOHNSTOWN

A MURDER IN JOHNSTOWN SATURDAY EVENING. POLICE SAY 27 YEAR OLD JEREEK ADAMS WAS KILLED AND ANOTHER PERSON WAS INJURED WHEN THEY WERE SHOT ALONG WAGNER STREET IN THE OAKHURST HOMES AREA. THE SECOND VICTIM IS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION AT MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER. NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE.

SHOTS FIRED IN ALTOONA

AN HOUR LONG STANDOFF ENDED WITH NO INJURIES LAST NIGHT AT 6TH AVENUE AND 1ST STREET IN ALTOONA. POLICE SAY 44 YEAR OLD MICHAEL TURIANO, WHO IS KNOWN AS JOHN, FIRED SEVERAL SHOTS INTO THE AIR…APPARENTLY TO GET COPS TO RESPOND ON THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF HIS FATHER’S DEATH. HE ALERTED POLICE BY POSTING A MESSAGE ON FACEBOOK. ONCE OFFICERS SHOWED UP, HE FIRED IN THEIR DIRECTION….AND POLICE USED FACEBOOK TO CONVINCE HIM TO SURRENDER.

BOMB SUSPECT JAILED

18 YEAR-OLD VLADISLAV MIFTAKHOV SPENT MOST OF THE WEEKEND IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON AFTER BEING ARRESTED SATURDAY AFTER POLICE FOUND BOMB-MAKING MATERIALS AT HIS APARTMENT ON THE 100 BLOCK OF NORTH 9TH AVENUE IN THE JUNIATA SECTION OF ALTOONA. POLICE ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE RUSSIAN TEEN, A STUDENT AT PENN STATE ALTOONA, WAS GROWING AND SELLING MARIJUANA. ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, MIFTAKHOV CLAIMS HE WAS ONLY PLANNING TO DETONATE THE BOMB IN A REMOTE FIELD, BUT HIS ROOMMATE SAYS HE PREVIOUSLY SET OFF 3 MINI-BOMBS RIGHT OUTSIDE THEIR APARTMENT. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR FEBRUARY 5TH.

DANGEROUS DRUG IN PITTSBURGH

THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER IS WARNING PEOPLE ABOUT A DANGEROUS DRUG THAT IS CIRCULATING IN THE PITTSBURGH AREA. OFFICIALS SAID SUNDAY THAT AT LEAST 7 PEOPLE DIED OVER THE WEEKEND AND MORE THAN A DOZEN HAVE OVERDOSED ON HEROIN THAT COMES IN A STAMP BAG LABELED “THERAFLU.” POLICE BELIEVE THE HEROIN CONTAINS THE PAIN-KILLER FENTANYL.

PSU UNDER REVIEW

PENN STATE IS UNDER REVIEW BY THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION’S OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ITS HANDLING OF SEXUAL ASSAULT COMPLAINTS. WTAJ REPORTS THE REVIEW COMES AFTER A PENN STATE REPORT HIGHLIGHTING THE INCREASE IN SEXUAL OFFENSES REPORTED TO CAMPUS POLICE BETWEEN 2010 AND 2012. UNIVERSITY SPOKESPERSON LISA POWERS SAYS PENN STATE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THE OFFICE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS ON THIS PRO-ACTIVE COMPLIANCE REVIEW.

NURSES MAY STRIKE

NURSES AT UPMC ALTOONA REMAIN ON THE JOB WITHOUT A CONTRACT AFTER THEIR EXPIRED FRIDAY NIGHT. MORE TALKS ARE SCHEDULED TODAY. THE UNION HAS AUTHORIZED A 10-DAY STRIKE NOTICE, BUT IT HAS NOT YET BEEN SENT.

CHEAPER GAS?

IT'S COSTING A LITTLE LESS TO FILL UP THE GAS TANK LATELY, AT LEAST IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE AVERAGE PRICE OF GAS DROPPED ALMOST 3 AND A-HALF CENTS OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS. THE LUNDBERG SURVEY RELEASED SUNDAY SHOWS THE NATIONWIDE AVERAGE IS $3.31. IN THE ALTOONA AREA, WE’RE STILL PAYING $3.59.
