BLAIR COUNTY BRUSH FIRE

12 BLAIR COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED TO A WILDFIRE THAT SCORCHED ABOUT 10 ACRES ON WOPSY MOUNTAIN YESTERDAY, USING CREWS ON THE GROUND AND IN THE AIR. THE RUGGED CONDITIONS IN THE JUNIATA GAP AREA MADE THIS A VERY DIFFICULT BLAZE FOR FIREFIGHTERS TO BATTLE. THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES IS INVESTIGATING. SEVERAL RECENT BRUSH FIRES IN THE AREA HAVE BEEN RULED ARSON.

LILLY MAN MISSING

STATE POLICE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY ARE SEARCHING FOR A MISSING MAN WHO IS CONSIDERED ENDANGERED. 45-YEAR-OLD MARK SNYDER OF LILLY WAS LAST SEEN TUESDAY MORNING AT HIS HOME. SNYDER IS THOUGHT TO BE DRIVING A BLUE 2008 KIA OPTIMA. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON HIS WHEREABOUTS SHOULD CALL THE EBENSBURG BARRACKS AT 471-65-HUNDRED.

LIFEFLIGHTED AFTER ACCIDENTS

STATE POLICE IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY SAY A MAN WAS FLOWN TO THE HOSPITAL YESTERDAY MORNING AFTER BEING CRUSHED BY A LARGE CONSTRUCTION VEHICLE AT HILLTOP ROAD AND GRAY HOLLOW ROAD IN BOGGS TOWNSHIP. SCOTT SURGEONER, A SPOKEMAN FOR FIRST ENERGY, SAID CREWS FROM EAGLE TOWING WERE DOING CLEAN-UP WORK OUTSIDE THE FENCE OF THE PENELEC SUBSTATION IN WALLACETON WHEN ONE OF EAGLE’S EMPLOYEES WAS STRUCK BY ONE OF THAT COMPANY’S TRUCKS. NO WORD ON THE VICTIM’S CONDITION.

A MALE AND FEMALE FROM NEW MILLPORT WERE FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA LAST NIGHT FOLLOWING A HEAD-ON COLLISION ALONG PINE RUN ROAD IN KNOX TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY THEIR CAR CAUGHT FIRE AFTER IT WAS HIT BY A VEHICLE BELIEVED TO BE A 1990’S MODEL FORD EXPLORER. THE OTHER DRIVER FLED THE SCENE WHILE THE 2 VICTIMS WERE TRAPPED IN THE BURNING WRECKAGE. THEY WERE ABLE TO FREE THEMSELVES.

ANOTHER THREAT AT PHILIPSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL

STATE POLICE SAY SOMEONE WROTE A MESSAGE ON A BATHROOM WALL YESTERDAY SAYING “I WILL KILL U ALL.” ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL TROOPERS AT 857-38-HUNDRED. 2 BOYS HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH WRITING BOMB THREATS AT PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA HIGH SCHOOL LAST MONTH…AND A 14 YEAR OLD BOY HAS CONFESSED TO DOING THE SAME AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

VOTER I-D CHALLENGE?

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SAID HE WON'T APPEAL A STATE COURT RULING THAT STRUCK DOWN PENNSYLVANIA'S VOTER IDENTIFICATION LAW. HE RELEASED A STATEMENT THURSDAY DEFENDING THE LAW, BUT SAYING IT NEEDED CHANGES AND HE HOPED TO WORK WITH THE LEGISLATURE ON THEM. THE LAW WAS ONE OF THE STRICTEST IN THE NATION, REQUIRING NEARLY ALL VOTERS TO SHOW CERTAIN FORMS OF PHOTO ID AT THE POLLS. IT WAS NEVER ENFORCED AFTER BEING DECLARED UNCONSTITUTIONAL BY A COMMONWEALTH COURT JUDGE IN JANUARY.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

THE PENN STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION IS OVER AND THE RESULTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED THIS MORNING DURING THE BOARD’S MEETING AT THE PENN STATER. MEANWHILE, CLIFF BENSON AND TODD RUCCI OFFICIALLY JOINED THE BOARD THURSDAY, REPLACING IRA LUBERT AND ALVIN CLEMENS. THEY WERE APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT WHO WILL ALSO NAME A STUDENT TO THE BOARD BEFORE ITS SCHEDULED JULY MEETING. BENSON IS CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER FOR THE BUFFALO SABRES HOCKEY TEAM…AND RUCCI IS A FORMER PENN STATE FOOTBALL LETTERMAN WHO ONCE SERVED AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY.

COMMENCEMENT

IT’S GRADUATION WEEKEND AT PENN STATE. AT UNIVERSITY PARK, CEREMONIES BEGIN THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY AT THE BOTH THE BRYCE JORDAN CENTER AND EISENHOWER AUDITORIUM. MORE THAN 13-THOUSAND DIPLOMAS WILL BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS UNIVERSITY-WIDE. PENN STATE ALTOONA'S SPRING COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY IS TOMORROW AT 10AM IN THE JAFFA SHRINE.

FOOD DRIVE

THE NATIONAL LETTER CARRIERS AND THE US POST OFFICE ARE CONDUCTING A FOOD DRIVE TOMORROW. RESIDENTS CAN PLACE CANNED GOODS AND DRY GOODS ON THEIR DOORSTEPS OR UNDER THEIR MAILBOXES. CARRIERS WILL PICK THEM UP AND DISTRIBUTE THEM AMONG LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES.
